I wrote my story about my health that you can read HERE. One of my problems was that I got diabetes as a result of my weakened heart.
Taking insulin and pricking my fingers twice a day was not making me happy but I did it because I was scared. I wasn’t living, I was barely here, not dying but not living either. Not excited about anything, and low energy and always in pain. Yuck!!!
I found something that, through prayer, just so happened to come into my life and that something helped me to eat better too. I now drool when I see different salad recipes whereas before I would drool over sweets and desserts!
After a while of taking better care of what I ate and took into my body I began to start walking. I started a group called Walk and Talk just so I would be accountable to show up and walk.
We had vehicle problems and after that was fixed we had work schedule problems so I couldn’t do the Walk and Talk. On top of that I scraped the back of my right foot heel while closing the door so I couldn’t walk anyway. When it started to clear up some I would wear slippers to walk around the block.
Now, I am very allergic to smoke and where we live when the sugar cane is being burned it fills our house with smoke. Even when I eat good and do everything right the smoke floors me. I get sick! Especially when it’s 24 hours a day non stop. So that happened and I stopped walking and had a hard time getting back into it but I’m happy to say I did get back into it!
We still had work schedule conflicts but what I did is walk around my block 3 to 6 times. If I walk around 6 times it takes about an hour and is 1 mile.
Since I am getting so much better I wanted to do something. Something that would contribute to the community in a positive way. I was so thankful for my health getting better that I wanted to give back and so I just came upon the Stride Against Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and signed up for that.
I was able to raise $100 but couldn’t make it to the walk (work schedules) so what I did is walk around my block 6 times. It’s only 1 mile and had I made it to Polo Beach where the team was I would’ve walked 3mi. It’s easier when there’s a group walking together.
I Love it though and wanted to do more walks so I looked up Diabetes Association. Surely they have a walk because walking is good for diabetes. And yes they do! I contacted the person in charge and I may be doing a community walk since there isn’t one here on Maui. Even though, I can still do a walk by myself and get donations.
The Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes is March 18, 2017 (Saturday). To donate or join my team click HERE
My next goal is to get into power walking. I don’t like to run but I love walking so power walking is a little closer to running. I’m looking forward to getting into that!
